Berkeley game played on March18, 2007-Cal Poly 7/ University of
California at Berkeley 8
Cal came out fired up
on senior day at Maxwell field. They took an early lead and never
relinquished it. The Mustangs fought back to tie it in the fourth
to force OT. Junior goalie John Hatfield (Bella Vista, Sacramento)
had numerous one on one saves throughout the three OT periods but
the Mustangs were unable to convert offensively. Best of luck to
the Bears this season. Special thanks to the Cal Poly parents for
showing up in force and supporting the team.

Cal Poly vs. University of San Diego game
played on March 4, 2007-Cal Poly 12/ University of San Diego 4
The game started slow,
with both teams struggling to convert on numerous opportunities
in the first. The bright spot for the Mustangs was once again at
the face off X, where senior Reza Kazemini went 13 of 14 during
the first three quarters before sitting in the fourth. Attackmen
Colin Mason (SO, Palo Alto) and Seth Kweller (JR, Oakland) led the
push from X while senior Davis Reilly (SR, Sacramento) applied pressure
from up top. Junior keeper John Hatfield (Sacramento) had another
outstanding performance in cage showing outstanding leadership and
thwarting numerous scoring opportuties. We would like to thank San
Diego for making the trip to San Luis Obispo.
Cal Poly vs. St. Mary's College game played
on March 3, 2007-Cal Poly 18/ St. Mary's College 2
The Mustangs and Gaels
squared of at Cal Poly Saturday afternoon under sunny skies . The
Mustangs maintained possession throughout most of the first quarter
thanks to senior Reza Kazemini, who broke 65% at the faceoff X for
the fourth game in a row. Freshman Andrew Haviland totaled five
points in his first collegiate start at attack, the first of which
came with 14:47 left in the first quarter. Freshman LSM Patrick
Barbour did an outstanding job shutting down the Gaels star attackman
Chris Burns and distupting their offense. St Mary's was a class
act and we thank them for making the trip to San Luis Obispo. Cal
Poly faces USD tomorrow at 2pm.

In a less than charismatic
game the Mustangs pulled off a victory against the Golden Gophers.
Cal Poly rested their starters for much of the first half and entered
half time tied 5-4. Cal Poly would like to thank Minnesota and the
family of Chris Jenkins for putting together a great tournament
at a fantastic venue.

Cal Poly vs. Chico State University game
played on February 10, 2007-Cal Poly 9/ Chico State University 6
The Mustangs and
Wildcats gathered at San Marin HS Saturday to continue the annual
battle for the boot. The Mustangs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead
but the Wildcats fought back and tied it up at 3 a piece to end
the first. In the second Matt Anderson (Jr, Marin Catholic HS) went
to work, tallying two assists and one goal to give Cal Poly a 6-3
lead at half. Chico came roaring back, scoring 30 seconds into the
third. But the Mustang defense, led by Mark Govan (Jr, Acalanes
HS), held firm. Strong performances from FOGO's Reza Kazemini (Sr,
Maria Carrillo HS) and Robbie Jordan (Jr, Amador Valley HS) secured
possession for most of the fourth, allowing the Mustang's offense
to tire the talented Chico defense. Freshman Devin Mateo (Fr, Bishop
O'Dowd) scored late in the fourth to complete the hat trick. The
Mustang's man up (3-4) and man down units, coupled with the attack's
relentless ride, proved to be the difference in the end. Special
thanks to head coaches Paul Rocchio of Chico State and Marty of
San Marin HS for making this event possible.

Poly men's lacrosse team routs Nevada
The Cal Poly men's lacrosse
team built an 11-0 lead in its home opener last Saturday on its
way to a 14-3 rout of Nevada.
Offensively, the team
was led by top scorers and seniors Sean Quirk and captain Davis
Reilly, who had three goals and one assist apiece.
On defense, Cal Poly
held its ground with junior Mark Govan and seniors Shea McManus
and Ryan Hatheway.
"It was a great
way to start our season," Hatheway said. "Hopefully we
can keep our momentum going all year."
Cal Poly goalkeeper John
Hatfield had quite a day keeping the Wolf Pack silent with no recorded
saves during the first quarter and holding Nevada's offense scoreless
into the third.
The Mustangs scored an
additional six goals in the second quarter, two in the third and
one in the fourth.
"I thought the game
went really well," sophomore defenseman Kendal Shomura said.
"I think the real games are going to be in the coming weeks
like (UC) Santa Barbara and Chico (State)."
Cal Poly visits Chico
State on Saturday.
"I think this weekend
will be a real test," senior defenseman McManus said.
Chico State has been
one of Cal Poly's biggest rivals since 1981.
Cal Poly's men's lacrosse
program began 25 years ago and has been nationally ranked for the
past five years.
The
men compete in the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League, which is
under the national umbrella of the U.S. Lacrosse Intercollegiate
Associates.
There is a national tournament
held in the beginning of May in Plano, Texas, which pits the best
teams from more 150 colleges and universities around the country
against one another.Senior
face-off specialist Robbie Jordan said that this year the team wants
to "bring the trophy home to San Luis Obispo."
Along with the other
face-off specialist, senior Reza Kazemini, the duo plans on bringing
its infamous "shake and bake" moves back to Texas for
a second time.
"I shake,
he bakes," Kazemini said.
After placing eighth
out of 16 at nationals a year ago, the team is expected to go even
farther this year with the 18 freshmen who recently joined.Cal
Poly's next home game is against UC Santa Barbara at 2 p.m. Feb.
17 on the lower fields at the Sports Complex.

Fall Ball Wrap-Up
The
Cal Poly Mustangs effectively put the disappointing 2005 season behind
them with an excellent Fall Ball campaign, which included a successful
trip to the Best of the West Invitational Tournament in Las Vegas
and a big victory in their annual Alumni Game. After posting their
first losing record in over a decade in 2005, the Mustangs went through
a lot of changes during the off-season. Head coach, Ryan Herchenroether,
stepped down to pursue a graduate degree on the east coast and former
head coach, Marc Lea, returned to lead the program after a two-year
hiatus. In addition to the changes on the sidelines, the Mustangs
roster has a vastly different look for the 2006 season. Four key members
of the 2005 season have left due to graduation, but the Mustangs reloaded
with the return of several important players from the 2004 squad and
the largest, most talented recruiting class in team history.
Despite finishing the 2005 season with a tough playoff loss to rival
Chico State and an uncharacteristic 6-9 record, the Mustangs still
finished the year ranked 21st in the nation - a testament to their
difficult schedule and an indication of the team's solid core of players.
In 2006, the Mustangs will return their starting attack unit and top
three scorers from last season, Matt Anderson, Sean Quirk, and WCLL
All-Star Seth Kweller. On defense, WCLL All-Star Ari Elden and starter
Mark Govan will lead the squad, but they will have to deal with the
graduation losses of Matt Faustman, perennial all-star Tom Alderman,
and goalkeeper Ryan Parr. At the midfield line, the Mustangs have
a solid group of experienced veterans, including Brian Kelly, Steve
Jones, Davis Reilly, and Stuart Vik. Besides the returning 2005 players,
midfielders Reza Kazemini and Grant Schubert and All-American attackman
Tim Casey rejoin the team after sitting out the 2004 season. The Mustangs
also welcome in an impressive recruiting class, which includes numerous
players that should make substantial contributions in their first
season with the team. Transfer student ErichFaustman (defense; De
La Salle HS), freshmen Colin Mason (attack; Palo Alto Tomahawks),
freshman Sean Perry (goal; Torrey Pines HS), freshman Kendal Shomura
(defense; Foothill HS), and freshman Mark Swoboda (midfield; Foothill
HS) are just a handful of the key rookies on a Mustang's roster that
will carry over 15 players new to the program.
Alumni
Game - November 19th, 2005
The
Mustangs finished off their Fall Ball season with a 12-3 drubbing
of a powerful alumni squad on Saturday, November 19th. Under perfect,
sunny skies the current team and the alumni squad squared off for
what many anticipated to be the closest alumni game in years. On
paper, the alumni team appeared to be stacked and ready. With former
WCLL All-Stars at nearly every position, including defensemen Tom
Alderman (2005), Brady Johnston (2001), Aaron Myers (2003), and
Scott Sablan (2001); midfielders Andy Parr (2003), Sean Whitacre
(2003), and Chris Wilkinson (2005); and attackmen Zach Dostart (2003),
Jim Fipp (2002), and Patrick McDonough (2001) the alumni should
have been a formidable opponent for the young Mustangs. However,
the new look Mustangs had other plans. The team was off and running
early, rattling off four goals in the first quarter and racing out
to a 7-1 halftime lead. Despite the best efforts of alumni goalkeeper
Ryan Parr, who made a dazzling array of spectacular saves, the alumni
could simply not maintain the pace of the young Cal Poly squad.
The current team spread the wealth in this game, as ten different
players finished with at least one point. Sean Quirk led the scoring
with 2 goals and 2 assists, while Matt Anderson (1g/1a), Tim Casey
(1 g/1a), Seth Kweller (2g), and Colin Mason (2g) all tallied two
points apiece. On the defensive end, Ari Elden and Mark Govan led
the way, but the entire unit had a strong performance, including
the two goalkeepers. Sean Perry and John Hatfield both played well
in the cage, with Perry allowing just one goal during the first
half and Hatfield holding the alumni to two goals during the second
half.
Best
of the West Invitational Tournament in Las Vegas - October 21-22,
2005
In
October, the Mustangs headed to Las Vegas to play an ambitious tournament
schedule against Arizona, Arizona State, BYU, and Utah. With a little
over three weeks of practice under their belts, several key players
unavailable, and half the squad in their first year with the team,
Cal Poly faced a lot of challenges as they arrived in Sin City.
First up was a full-length game against the Utah Utes on Friday
night, who finished the 2005 season ranked 13th in the nation. The
Mustangs looked sluggish in the first half but kept the game close
due to an excellent performance by the defensive unit, most notably
senior defender Ari Elden, who besides shutting down his attackman
scored the Mustangs first two goals of the game, and freshman goalkeeper
Sean Perry, playing in his first college level game. The Mustangs
stormed back in the second half, utilizing a solid transition game
and fast moving offense. The game came down to the wire with Utah
scoring a goal late in the 4th quarter to take the 12-11 lead. The
Mustangs had several offensive opportunities in the waning moments
of the game, but could not find the back of the net and the Utes
earned the victory. Despite the loss, the Cal Poly coaching staff
was pleased with the effort and determination displayed in the Mustangs
first game of the year.
On Saturday, the games shifted to a shortened running-time format,
and the Cal Poly coaching staff adjusted their substitutionpatterns
as well, making sure that everyone on their youthful 40 player roster
saw plenty of playing time. First up on Saturday was an early morning
game against the up and coming Arizona State Sun Devils, who finished
the 2005 season just outside of the Top 25 rankings. The Sun Devils
were fired up and ready for the contest and defeated the Mustangs
6-4. Despite another close loss, the Cal Poly coaching staff remained
positive about the performance. Head coach Marc Lea, commented after
the loss, "We only have a few weeks of practice behind us and we've
really been focusing on stickwork and our fundamentals. We haven't
practiced clears or EMO nearly enough and it showed today. We'll
try and make some adjustments before the BYU game and see if we
can't get out of here with at least one victory." A huge bright
spot in the ASU game was the play of sophomore goaltender, John
Hatfield, who had a solid outing playing his first minutes between
the pipes since high school.
In
the second game of the day, the Mustangs faced perennial MDIA powerhouse
BYU Cougars. Again, Cal Poly had difficulty with their clears, which
resulted in a glaring disparity of possession time. However, the
Mustang defensive unit didn't wilt under the pressure and the game
came down to the final minutes. With the Cougars leading 4-3, the
Mustangs had a long possession in the closing minutes, firing off
three quality shots that missed the mark. After the loss, Coach
Lea remarked, "We had a chance in this one. We really didn't play
our best, and we still had a shot at sending it into OT - which
is a good sign. We have a really tough schedule again this year,
so we might as well get used to these one-goal games. Now, we have
to find a way to be on the other side of the close ones."
The Mustangs finished up the weekend against another tough squad,
the University of Arizona Laxcats who finished the 2005 season ranked
12th in the nation. After three close losses to three quality teams,
Cal Poly was determined not to leave Las Vegas winless. The Mustangs
jumped on the Laxcats early and often, and raced to a 7-1 victory.
With three games under their belts, the inexperienced offense finally
started to click and was able to find the holes in the Arizona defense.
The Mustangs were led by a trio of underclassmen, as freshman attackman
Colin Mason, and sophomores Matt Anderson and Seth Kweller all had
excellent performances. The victory ended the weekend on a positive
note, and gave the Mustangs a good indication of what they need
to work on in the coming months.
The Mustangs 1-3 finish at the Best of the West Invitational was
not indicative of the promise the 2006 season holds. "Being on the
quarter system, we are always at a bit of a disadvantage at the
fall tournaments," Coach Lea commented. "We don't get a lot of practice
time in before the Vegas trip, and some aspects of our game really
aren't ready for prime time. But our overall talent level was impressive,
and our team O and team D played solid lacrosse all weekend. I was
especially pleased with our two young goalkeepers - they both looked
ready to play at the college level. We have a long way to go and
a lot to work on, but there were a lot of positive things we can
take away from the weekend. It would have been nice to go 3-1 or
undefeated here in Vegas, but we're more focused on being ready
to play when February rolls around." The Cal Poly Mustangs 2006
season will open up with a home game against WCLL Central division
opponent Cal Berkeley on Sunday, February 5th.
