Cal Poly Finishes Up the Regular Season Ranked #1 in the Nation

The Cal Poly Mustangs finished off their best regular season in program history last Saturday with a 17-10 victory over rival Chico State. The Mustangs emerged victorious in the annual “Battle for the Boot” to end the regular season undefeated (6 – 0) in WCLL divisional play.

The Mustangs went 16 – 1 during the regular season and earned victories over the defending National Champion BYU Cougars and an overtime victory against the Colorado State Rams on the road in Fort Collins. Cal Poly also defeated Chapman for the first time since 2007 and knocked off the Oregon Ducks, who ended the Mustangs season at the national tournament in Denver in 2011.

Cal Poly reached another milestone in 2012 earning their first ever #1 national ranking, as they grabbed the top spot in the March 27th Nike/Inside Lacrosse MCLA Coaches Poll. The Mustangs’ have held onto the rank ever since, and head into the playoffs ranked #1 for six straight weeks, including five weeks as the unanimous number one pick.

The Mustangs head into the WCLL Championship weekend looking for their fourth straight league title. They hope to come away with the league trophy and head into the National Championship tournament in Greenville, South Carolina as the top seed.

Heberer Named MCLA's Division I Nike Player of the Month

March 19, 2012
by Allie Bakalar

Cal Poly attackman Scott Heberer was named the MCLA’s Division I Nike Player of the Month for February on March 12th.  Voted on by Division I coaches, the award was based on the nominated players’ on-field performance in MCLA games during the month of February.

“It’s a great individual accomplishment to be recognized as Player of the Month,” said Heberer. “But it also speaks volumes about the steps that Cal Poly Lacrosse, especially in the past few years, is making towards becoming one of the MCLA's consistently top ranked programs.”

Heberer helped lead the Mustangs to a 4-1 start this season against highly ranked MCLA teams including Oregon, BYU, California and UC Santa Barbara.  He had a total of 10 goals and 7 assists during the month, 5 of those points coming against BYU, the #1 ranked team at the time.

Heberer has felt satisfied with his performance thus far, but said there is room for improvement with things such as game and time management along with getting teammates more involved in the action.

“As a senior attackman, I have to take on more responsibility for how the offense operates throughout the games, whether that means a settled possession or pushing transition when opportunities present themselves,” said Heberer.  “I also take pride in assists, so that would be another part of my game I need to focus on for the rest of season because assists point to my ability in putting teammates in positions to be successful.”

Teammate Bowen Dunnahoo-Kirsch said Heberer’s selection is past due.  “Scott is extremely deserving of this honor,” said Dunnahoo-Kirsch.  “He has been an integral part of this team’s success for four years, and I'm glad that he's finally getting some notoriety.”

“He’s an extremely versatile player that can find his way in front of a net just as easily as he can pass it to a cutting attackman for an assist. Teams are constantly having to adjust to defend a potent scorer or a cerebral passer,” Dunnahoo-Kirsch added.

Mustangs Name Team Captains for the 2012 Season

The Cal Poly Lacrosse team named seniors Tim DeSimone, Matt Graupmann, and Bowen Dunnahoo-Kirsch as captains for the 2012 season on February 1, 2012. Each player was selected by their current teammates to represent them as leaders on and off the field.

“I consider it a great honor. It means a lot to have your peers vote you in as a captain and to consider you a leader,” said Dunnahoo-Kirsch. “It's also very humbling because I consider a captain to be a foundational strength on and off the field, and that is how I try to behave. I have always looked up to the previous captains and considered them great assets and friends. I hope my selection is reflected of the same.”

Along with the title of team captain comes a responsibility that DeSimone said he is looking forward to.

“I am most excited about bringing the best out of all my teammates,” said DeSimone. “I think it is my responsibility to push my teammates and, in turn, have them push me. Competition is key for our success.”

Competing as a team player is vital in bringing wins to a club, but in addition, all three captains said they plan on using their titles as a tool to benefit the team as a whole.

“As a captain I want to make sure that we get the most out of every practice. If everyone on the team is pushing to become better every practice then my job is done,” said Graupmann. “If we get our job done on the practice field then it will translate to our games. I think we have a squad that can really make some noise in the MCLA.”
